In 1999, the year before the Don't ask, Don't tell policy was imposed upon the armed forces, three naval officers based on the island of Vieques were approaching a rare four-day leave. They decided to invite friends and colleagues from across the United States to join them in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The three men mailed postcards and invitations expressing the following sentiment, It Sizzles in San Juan Six weeks later the three gentlemen hopped on a ferry and left for the island of Puerto Rico. In addition to the twenty-one friends they'd already invited, those friends took it upon themselves to invite a few friends as well. This boosted the number to thirty-five, and for the next three days they all took to the beaches of San Juan raising the temperature well above the national average.

By 2001, the same men who'd invited a few personal friends to enjoy a weekend in the Puerto Rico were now hosting one of the foremost alternative lifestyle events for Black and Latino men in the Caribbean. These men, now known as the San Juan Brothas, turned their once private vacation into a sun-splashed soiree filled with book readings, art showings and film viewing's for all to enjoy.

The San Juan Brothas (SJ) is a non-profit Organization based in New York City with offices in both Atlanta and Los Angeles.
